THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING TIKTOK VIDEOS TO INCREASE STUDENTS' ENGLISH VOCABULARY AT THE EIGHTH GRADE OF SMPN 36 PURWOREJO IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2022/2023

Abstract

This study aims to describe students' English vocabulary and determine whether or not TikTok videos are useful for developing vocabulary. A quasi-experimental design was used in this study's quantitative investigation. This study's population consists of 192 eighth-grade students from SMPN 36 Purworejo during the school year 2022/2023. This study's sample consists of 64 students from VIII A and VIII E. Purposive sampling was used to select 32 students for each class. The information was gathered through the use of exams and closed-ended questionnaires. The findings of this study, there is a difference in the outcomes of students taught using TikTok videos and those who were not. This research shows that after the treatment, there is a difference in the results between students taught using TikTok videos and those without TikTok videos. The research finding shows that the mean of the experimental class post-test is 70.50. Meanwhile, the mean of the control class post-test is 62.28. The final result of the t-test analysis shows that the Sig. (2 - tailed) value is lower than 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05) and the Tvalue is higher than the Ttable (4.656 > 2.000). As a result, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Additionally, the questionnaire revealed that students of the experimental class have good perceptions. The results show that TikTok videos considerably influenced the vocabulary of students in the eighth grade at SMPN 36 Purworejo during the academic year 2022/2023. As a result, English teachers should be: (1) innovative and creative in guiding the students in exploring TikTok videos as learning materials so that they can absorb them, and (2) creative and innovative in selecting and presenting information depending on their needs.
