THE TECHNIQUES OF METAPHOR TRANSLATION IN THE HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS NOVEL

Abstract


The research aims at analyzing the metaphor translation of an English novel namely Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets and its Indonesian novel version entitled Harry Potter dan Kamar Rahasia. Metaphorical translation is deserved to be the research topic since it has a high difficulty on the way it is translated. Metaphor which is a figurative expression, is a cultural expression from the language where it belongs. Translating language means translating the language in it. This is for the relation between culture and language is like two sides of an unseparatable coin.  The method of the research is qualitative descriptive research. 67 data were taken through observation and interview. The result shows that the translator uses 7 types from 18 types of translation techniques as stated by Larson. They are Reduction, Variation, Adaptation, Established Equivalent, Description, Transposision and Literal translation technique. Established Equivalent technique is used as majority since it is used in 43 data in the research. Adaptation technique is used in one data as same as Description and Literal translation technique.
