INCREASING LEARNING MOTIVATION AND READING COMPETENCE OF EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP N 1 TURI IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2015/2016 BY USING COOPERATIVE LEARNING MODEL TYPE JIGSAW

Abstract


Abstract. Low reading competence of students became a big problem that should be overcome
as early as possible. Low learning motivation was one of causes that made students’ reading
competence low. Using monotonous learning models could make students have low learning
motivation. Therefore, one of efforts to increase students’ reading competence was by
increasing students’ learning motivation by using cooperative learning model type jigsaw. Thus,
the aim of this research was increasing learning motivation and reading competence of eighth
grade students of SMP N 1 Turi in the academic year of 2015/2016 by using cooperative
learning model type jigsaw. This research used Classroom Action Research. The subject of the
research was eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Turi, Sleman, Yogyakarta in the academic year
of 2015/2016. The data were collected in the form of formative test results, observation on
students’ motivation in learning processes and field notes. While, the data analysis technique
was descriptive analysis. The results of the study showed that: 1) students’ learning motivation
increased from low to high level; 2) students’ reading competence increased based on the
increase of the average marks and classical achievement of formative tests. In the first cycle,
the average mark was 53,56 and in the second cycle was 89,22. The classical achievement
increased from 9,38% in the first cycle to 87,50% in the second cycle.
