THE ANALYSIS OF RELATIVE CLAUSES FOUND ON THE CAPTIONS OF BBC NEWS INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT IN 2018 AND ITS APPLICATION IN TEACHING GRAMMAR

Abstract
This study uses descriptive qualitative. The aims of this study are to identify the types of relative
clauses found on the captions of BBC News instagram account and to describe the application of
relative clauses found on the captions of BBC News instagram account for teaching grammar. The
researchers use some steps to collect the data. Those are finding BBC News instagram account,
reading the captions of BBC News instagram account, taking captures the captions of BBC News
instagram account uploaded from 1st January 2018 to 31stMarch 2018, choosing the sentences that
consist of relative clauses. While, in analyzing the data, the researcher uses some steps: identifying
the data, classifying the data based on the types of relative clauses, calculating the data applying the
findings in teaching grammar at the twelfth grade of Senior High School, and drawing conclusion and
suggestion.The result of this study shows that there are 78 relative clauses found on the captions of
BBC News instagram account uploaded from 1st January 2018 to 31st March 2018. The four types of
relative clauses found are SS relative clauses, OS relative clauses, SO relative clauses, and OO
relative clauses. OS relative clauses are the most dominant relative clauses found. There are 55 OS
relative clauses (70, 5%), 19 SS relative clauses (24, 4%), 4 OO relative clauses (5, 1%), and no SO
relative clauses (0 %). The relative clauses found in the analysis can be applied in teaching grammar
at twelfth grade of Senior High School.
