A NEED ANALYSIS OF ESP SYLLABUS DESIGN FOR ACCOUNTING PROGRAM AT SMK NEGERI 1 WONOSOBO IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2018/2019
Abstract
The aims of this research are: (1) to describe the present textbooks and their quality used by English teachers at accounting program at SMK, (2) to explain to what extend do the teachers and the students need ESP-content based English materials in their English textbook, and (3) to describe the ESP-content based textbook of English for accounting program of SMK. This research was conducted in SMK Negeri 1 Wonosobo. The participants of this research were
64 students of accounting program in the academic year of 2018/2019 and two teachers who taught English at accounting program. This research used descriptive qualitative which conducted by distributing questionnaire was used in obtaining the data. The data were about need analysis of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) based on the theory of Hutchinson and Waters (1987) about target needs in learning English which consists of necessities, lacks, and wants. The findings show that the present textbook used by English teachers for accounting program at SMK Negeri 1 Wonosobo are Buku Paket Bahasa Inggris Kemendikbud and Buku Paket Express. The quality of that textbooks were good enough but there were some weaknesses. The students perceived that they do not find any relevance between the content of the materials on the texbooks which they learn with their needs in learning English as the students of accounting program. Their need in learning English is for preparing work in the subject area of accounting. Therefore, the students and teachers need ESP materials that in their English textbook and it is necessary in publishing English textbook containing ESP materials to equip the students skill in learning English which can be useful to enter the workplace.
